Part 1 of 4: The Morning Nervous System Series

I am so glad you stopped by. Let me begin with a simple “good morning.”

Let’s rewind to when you first woke up today.

Were you warm and cozy under the covers, resting deeply and waking with a sense of optimism about your day?

Or was it another restless night…. awake for hours, hoping for more sleep, already exhausted before your feet hit the floor?

Maybe you woke up with a heaviness in your chest, or a sick, anxious feeling in your stomach.

Hand holding a coffee mug on a beige comforter, next to an open book. Cozy and relaxed atmosphere, soft neutral tones.

Before your day even begins, your body is already telling a story.

Your body moves between three nervous system states without you consciously thinking about it. The goal ahead of us is to help you begin recognizing which state you’re in, because awareness is the first step toward healing.

Today, we’re going to gently explore one of those states - the parasympathetic state - the place of rest, safety, and steady breath. This is how to calm your nervous system.

So, while you’re still in bed, ask yourself:

  • How did I wake up this morning?

  • What were my first thoughts?

  • How did my body feel?

Nervous System 1: Calm and Steady

If you woke up feeling calm, looking forward to the day, even if it’s full and busy, you were likely in your parasympathetic state.

Your thoughts might sound like:

  • What will I have for breakfast?

  • I’ve got that meeting today; I want to be prepared.

  • The kids have friends coming over.

In this state:

  • Your body feels calm.

  • Your heart rate is steady.

  • Your stomach is soft and relaxed.

  • Your breathing is full and easy.

  • You feel present, engaged, resilient.

This is your parasympathetic nervous system at work. There may be responsibilities ahead, errands, meetings, even a difficult conversation, but they feel manageable. This is the state where connection, clarity, and health flourish.

Today, simply notice.

How did you wake up?

That awareness is your first small step toward nervous system healing.

But not everyone wakes up steady.

Some mornings begin with tension, racing thoughts, a body already braced for danger.

If that’s you, you’re not broken. Your nervous system is doing exactly what it was designed to do.

In the next post, we’ll gently unpack this high-alert state and how to begin calming it.

Scripture to Anchor

Psalm 4:8

“In peace I will lie down and sleep,

for you alone, Lord,

make me dwell in safety.”

Recap

Calm is your foundation.

Awareness begins healing.

What your body longs for, God already desires for you.
